Assessment

Heartburn is that burning sensation or discomfort that can move up from your stomach to the middle of your abdomen and chest. It can keep you up at night or make you regret your meal choice. You may be taking pills to control your heartburn.

How often do you experience heartburn?

Regurgitation from acid reflux can occur at any time. You might abruptly wake up with bitter tasting liquid in your throat. After a moment the regurgitation clears, but the bitter and burning feeling remains.

Do you experience regurgitation of food or acid?

Chronic dry cough, especially at night, can be a sign of Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a common condition caused by stomach contents (acid, bile salts, digestive enzymes) going back into the esophagus.

Do you experience coughing or clearing of the throat?

Other symptoms of GERD are trouble swallowing and feeling like food is stuck in your throat.

Do you have difficulty swallowing or feel something stuck in the throat?
